The Citizenship Program invites journalists from Nairobi to participate in an in-person media workshop on Citizenship and Digital Identity, taking place on 18th and 19th November at Ngong Hills Hotel, Nairobi.

This two-day workshop aims to strengthen the capacity of local journalists to understand, advocate for, and defend citizenship rights in the digital era. It will enhance participants’ understanding of the ongoing digitization of identity systems and their implications on access to citizenship documentation and public services in Kenya.

With the imminent rollout of a new digital identity system in Kenya, the question of citizenship rights has become increasingly crucial. The Nubian Rights Forum will bring together subject-matter experts and affected community representatives to engage meaningfully with journalists. These discussions will help deepen journalists’ knowledge of citizenship issues, the implications of digital identity systems, and the real-life challenges faced by marginalized communities in acquiring nationality documents.

About the Citizenship Program

The Nubian Rights Forum works with Kenyan communities who, though citizens by law, face discrimination and barriers when applying for essential identity documentation. The organization trains and deploys community paralegals—grassroots legal advocates with a deep understanding of the law—who empower communities to claim their rights. Rather than treating people as passive recipients of legal aid, these paralegals build power among citizens, helping them navigate and challenge systemic barriers to justice.
